How Home And Away Balance Works With Ten Teams
A ten-team league cannot play a full double round robin within a short window, so franchise cricket uses grouping rules that make each team's schedule deliberately unequal.

With ten teams, a full double round robin requires eighteen matches each. When the tournament window cannot accommodate that, the schedule has to become asymmetric.
The window sets the match count first
A franchise season occupies a fixed block in the calendar, bounded by international commitments and by weather. The number of matches that fits is determined before the format is designed.
If the window permits fourteen matches per team rather than eighteen, the league cannot have everyone play everyone twice. The format is derived from the calendar rather than the reverse.
Extending the window is difficult because players are contracted to national boards and the surrounding international schedule is fixed years ahead.
Grouping produces the asymmetry systematically
Teams are divided into groups, and each team plays those in its own group twice while playing some of the other group once. The pattern is fixed by rule rather than drawn.
The grouping is usually rotated between seasons so that no team faces the same imbalance repeatedly. Over several years the schedules even out even though any single season is uneven.
This is the same device other leagues use when the calendar prevents symmetry, and it carries the same cost: the final table compares teams that faced different opposition.
Home and away counts must still balance
Each team plays half its matches at home regardless of the grouping, because home revenue is a core part of a franchise's economics and cannot be distributed unevenly.
That constraint interacts with the grouping, since a team playing another twice must host one of those matches. The scheduler solves both conditions simultaneously.
Venue availability, broadcast slots and travel distance then further constrain which matches fall where, making the fixture list a genuine optimisation problem.
Neutral venues break the model when needed
When a season must be relocated or condensed, matches are moved to a small number of venues and the home and away distinction becomes nominal.
Teams retain designated home fixtures for scheduling and revenue purposes even when playing at a neutral ground, which preserves the structure if not the advantage.
Expansion changes the arithmetic again
Adding teams increases the number of possible pairings faster than it increases the available dates, so each expansion pushes the schedule further from symmetry.
Leagues respond either by lengthening the window, which is difficult, or by accepting a thinner schedule in which teams meet a smaller proportion of the field. Both are structural concessions.
